India vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test Day 5: Suthar's 10-Wicket Haul Seals 165-Run Win

India closed out the Galle Test in style on the final day, with Manav Suthar running through Sri Lanka's batting order to finish with match figures of 10 wickets as the hosts were bowled out for 206 in reply to a 372-run target. The result gives India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Here's how Day 5 unfolded.

Suthar Runs Through the Tail

Resuming on 84/4 and still needing 288 runs for an all-time record fourth-innings chase, Sri Lanka's morning began cautiously as Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha added a further 95 runs together, both reaching contested half-centuries along the way. India's breakthrough finally came through Ravindra Jadeja, who found extra bounce and turn on a fuller length to induce a top-edged sweep from de Silva, comfortably taken by Manav Suthar at short fine leg for 59. Niroshan Dickwella followed 14 runs later, edging behind off Prasidh Krishna for 10 to leave Sri Lanka six down. From there, Suthar took charge, mopping up the remaining wickets to finish with 6/55 in the innings and 10 wickets in the match, as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 206 in 77.4 overs.

India won by 165 runs.

A Maiden 10-Wicket Haul, in Only His Second Test

The headline performer was Manav Suthar. Having already taken 4/76 in Sri Lanka's first innings, the left-arm spinner returned with 6/55 in the second to complete his first Test 10-wicket match haul, doing so in just his second appearance at this level. His control and sharp turn on a wearing, low-bounce Galle surface left Sri Lanka's middle and lower order with few answers once the key partnership was broken, and he ended up the difference between the two sides across the match. Jadeja finished with 2/16 in the second innings to go with his role in dismissing de Silva, continuing an excellent match with both bat and ball.

Padikkal Named Player of the Match

Devdutt Padikkal, drafted into the XI at number three in place of the injured Sai Sudharsan, was named Player of the Match for his contributions across both innings: a maiden Test century of 167 in the first innings followed by a composed 44 in the second. Captain Shubman Gill praised both Padikkal's batting and Suthar's bowling after the win, with the result also arriving on Galle's 50th Test match and India's 600th overall.

What's Next

The win puts India 1-0 up with one Test to play, and also nudges their World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign forward, taking them to five wins from ten matches in the cycle.
