Tennis Came Full Circle: Iga Świątek and Elena Rybakina’s Incredible Grand Slam Coincidence
Tennis sometimes produces coincidences that are almost too perfect to believe. Iga Świątek and Elena Rybakina have now experienced one of them — with the roles completely reversed.
2023: Świątek’s Rome Setback
At the 2023 Italian Open in Rome, Świątek faced Rybakina in the quarterfinals. The defending champion was forced to retire with a hip injury while the match stood at 2–2 in the deciding set. Rybakina eventually went on to win the Rome title.
The retirement raised questions about Świątek's condition ahead of Roland Garros. But the story ended perfectly for the Polish star: she recovered and went on to win the French Open.
2026: Rybakina’s Turn
Three years later, the roles were reversed. At the 2026 Cincinnati Open, Rybakina faced Świątek in the quarterfinals but was forced to retire with an ankle injury while trailing 4–1 in the opening set.
Once again, the timing was worrying. The US Open was approaching, and Rybakina's fitness had suddenly become a major question.
And Then History Repeated Itself
Just like Świątek three years earlier, Rybakina answered the injury concerns in the best possible way.
She recovered, reached the US Open final and defeated Aryna Sabalenka 6–4, 5–7, 6–2 to win her first US Open title and third Grand Slam. The victory also lifted Rybakina to world No. 1.
The Balance Was Restored
